Lakenna Booker is the Founder and Head of School at Memphis Merit Academy Charter School, a position held since July 2017. Lakenna has authored a science instructional resource titled "The 5E's of Inquiry Based Instruction," co-written with Kathy Kopp, and provides professional development on the 5E model for inquiry-based instruction. With experience as a professional development trainer for Teacher Created Materials, Lakenna has presented nationally on best practices for instructional strategies. A former Fellow at Building Excellent Schools, Lakenna has contributed to urban charter school leadership. Previous roles include Dean of Instruction at Gestalt Community Schools, Classroom Teacher and Non-fiction Content Lead at KIPP Memphis Collegiate Schools, and Math and Science Teacher in Shelby County Schools. Lakenna holds an Administrative License K-12, a Master of Arts in Teaching, and a Bachelor of Science in Cell Biology and Anatomy.

OUR SCHOOL Memphis Merit Academy Charter School is a new kindergarten through eighth grade academically challenging, highly structured, and joyful elementary school in Memphis, TN. Through rigorous academics, high quality instruction, and character development, Memphis Merit Academy ensures all kindergarten through eighth grade students achieve the academic skills, knowledge, and moral foundation to be firmly on the path to college after matriculating through our school. OUR MISSION Through rigorous academics, high-quality instruction, and character development Memphis Merit Academy Charter School educates all students for success in high school, college, and life. OUR GROWTH In August 2019, Memphis Merit Academy Charter School will open its doors to 120 kindergarten and first grade students, and we will grow by 60 students until we reach full capacity of 540 students during the 2027-2028 school year. We are actively building a founding team that shares our belief that with rigorous academics, high quality instruction, and charter development all students are capable of excelling in high school, college, and life.
